Jon M. Chu can't help telling a good story. His singular goal is to make films that people can’t unsee. At an early age, Chu wove together home movies (on videotape) for his first audience - his family. What started as a childhood hobby became a Hollywood calling. As a director, Chu is known for his visually stunning blockbuster films. He is celebrated for his kinetic work across various genres, from groundbreaking series to commercials and blockbuster movies.

Most recently, Chu was at the helm of the much-anticipated film adaptation of Wicked the musical. The first installation of Wicked, which was released in November 2024, received universal praise for "perfectly capturing the magic", was an internal box-office hit, and earned a Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in 2025. The second movie, Wicked: For Good will be released in November 2025.

Chu also directed the worldwide phenomenon Crazy Rich Asians, which earned more than $175 million in the United States alone. The film is the first non-period studio picture in more than 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast, and it represents a new chapter in Chu's 10-year career. Chu also directed the widely praised adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical In the Heights for Warner Bros, which debuted in June 2021.

He is also in development on Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! with Warner Bros and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot, which will be his first animated film. His previous films include GI. Joe: Retaliation, Now You See Me 2, Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and many more representing over 1.3 billion dollars in the worldwide box office.

Additionally, his unique storytelling ability has earned him the honor of being on the Hollywood Reporter’s "Power 100" list as well as Variety’s "New Hollywood Leaders."

Chu's experience of carving his own path in an industry that historically doesn't offer much Asian representation, as well as the lived stories he's learned and witnessed in his life have fueled a passion to speak out and represent diverse stories passionately and with respectful and meticulous thought. In this time where “cinema is hurting,” Chu has said the fresh perspective of Asian American creatives is “going to save movies because these are the stories that have not been told yet.”
