Following his retirement from Congress, Kinzinger has remained busy. He now serves as a Senior Political Commentator for CNN. He also published a New York Times bestselling memoir Renegade: Defending Democracy and Liberty in Our Divided Country, where he recounts his story of faith, service, and political duty in a democracy under siege. He also authored the children's book That’s What Heroes Do. In 2024, Kinzinger was the central subject of The Last Republican documentary, which follows Kinzinger through his final term in Congress after he had broken ties with Donald Trump and the Republican party.
He now writes daily on his Substack This is Adam Kinzinger, which has accumulated more than 450,000 subscribers. Kinzinger’s Substack delivers political analysis, provides context on current events, and shares his perspective on the American government and global affairs. In 2026, he expanded his platform by launching The Kinzinger Report podcast, where he expands on his Substack writing as well as conducts interviews with thought leaders on a variety of topics.
During his six terms in Congress, Kinzinger proudly represented Illinois’ Sixteenth Congressional District, which stretches across 14 counties in Northern Illinois. Kinzinger served as a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he served as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, Energy and the Environment in the 116th Congress. He also served on the nonpartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.
His top priorities included strengthening U.S. energy policy and making our nation less reliant on foreign resources as well as bolstering the strength of our national security—both at home and abroad. Kinzinger also worked tirelessly for IL-16 and for the security of our nation. From getting veterans back to work to combating the opioid epidemic, Former Congressman Kinzinger fought for his constituents and stood up for America, keeping his oath to protect and defend our Constitution.
Before being elected to Congress, Kinzinger served in the Air Force in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Kinzinger served as a pilot in the Air National Guard, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, until his retirement in July 2023.
