About

The subject of literally thousands of articles from the world’s biggest publications, Darnell is known for his unconventional style and his bold, fearless and innovative programming. He is responsible for more of the biggest reality franchises than anyone in the world. In the face of unrelenting obstacles and naysayers at every turn, Darnell virtually single-handedly created a new genre of entertainment...changing the face of television as we know it today. In this humorous and inspiring talk, Darnell captivates audiences as he shares the story of his remarkable journey as a trailblazing television executive, delving into the unique philosophy that guided his success — one rooted in embracing the unconventional, taking daring risks, and forging ahead despite being told no at every turn. “Anytime I had a new or innovative concept, inevitably I would be told they will never let you do it, no one will watch that, you’re going to be fired! And inevitably those would be my biggest hits...that’s the power of bad ideas”.

With an emphasis on persistence, Darnell takes audiences through the myriad of shows from throughout his career that began as "bad ideas" only to become smash successes, later imitated by the very same people who once dismissed them as trash — American Idol, Family Guy, The Simple Life, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, Temptation Island, The Voice, The Bachelor Franchise, and literally hundreds of other top-rated, genre-defining television shows.

Darnell challenges audiences to trust their instincts, take risks, and buck convention — leaving them inspired, motivated and ready to explore the power of unconventional thinking and the power of believing in a concept...even when others tell you, “That’s a bad idea.”
