About

Jonathan Van Ness (he/she/they) is a hairstylist by trade turned personality, writer, comedian, and entertainer by life. They celebrate authenticity and uniqueness within the beauty and entertainment industry as an HIV+ nonbinary truth-teller. Jonathan is determined to make this world a better, more equitable yet funnier place.

As a true multi-hyphenate, Jonathan Van Ness is doing the most with his time by performing his sold-out stand-up comedy on tour, being an award-winning television personality, starting a sustainable haircare brand, being a New York Times best-selling author, practicing his gymnastics & figure skating skills, and having a podcast. There’s also the garden, chickens, cats, and dogs that he takes care of with his husband Mark, whom he married in 2020. Don’t let Jonathan near an adoption center because he will leave with another cat (or two).

His book, Love That Story: Observations from a Gorgeously Queer Life is a candid and curious essay collection. Balancing the dark and the light, the serious and Van Ness’ signature humor, these essays encourage readers to examine their individual assumptions and expand their horizons. Van Ness invites us to savor what makes us all so messy and gorgeous at the same time. Ultimately, it is about giving ourselves the permission to be flawed and fabulous. Jonathan Van Ness (he/she/they) is an Emmy Award-winning television personality, New York Times best-selling author, international touring comedian, podcaster, and hairstylist to the stars. He stars on Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning series Queer Eye. He is the host and executive producer of the new Netflix series Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, based on Jonathan’s popular podcast that's now titled Getting Better with Jonathan Van Ness. Always a storyteller, Jonathan first stepped in front of the camera in 2013. While styling his friend’s hair, an impromptu recap of HBO’s Game Of Thrones sparked the idea for what soon became the hit web series, Gay of Thrones, for web comedy outlet Funny or Die. The series later went on to be nominated three times for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.

In 2021, Jonathan took his lifetime of beauty expertise and launched his brand, JVN, a haircare line that sees all beauty, serves all beauty, and honors the uniqueness in each of us. Driven to change the beauty industry from within, the product line is sustainable and cruelty-free, built for every person and all hair types, expanding on his platform of acceptance and equality.

Jonathan’s first worldwide comedy tour, Jonathan Van Ness: Road to Beijing, included sold-out theatres across 40 cities in the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Jonathan’s new comedy tour: Imaginary Living Room Olympian, resumes this week with sold-out theatres in London, Manchester, Brighton, and Glasgow, followed by Radio City Music Hall and Boston in March, and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in Los Angeles this May.

In September 2019, he released his revelatory memoir, Over The Top: A Raw Journey To Self-Love, now a New York Times Best-Seller. Over The Top won the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Memoir & Autobiography and has been named a must-read book of 2019 by The New York Times, TIME Magazine, and NPR. In March 2020, Jonathan released his first children's picture book, Peanut Goes For The Gold, about a gender non-binary guinea pig who does everything with their own personal flair.

Jonathan is passionate about using his platform and voice for change. As an avid supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, he worked closely with Planned Parenthood and The Trevor Project on campaigns tied to the release of his book that focused on removing the shame and stigma that comes along with talking about sexual health, as well as the long-lasting effects of bullying and how to overcome it. In December 2019, Jonathan made history as the first non-female solo cover star of Cosmopolitan UK in 35 years.
