Chance the Rapper
Pioneer, Performer, & Advocate
About
Chance the Rapper is hailed as "a generational voice" by GQ and "an outstanding role model" by President Barack Obama. The multi-Grammy award winner has built a multifaceted career, redefining what it means to be an independent artist.
Born and raised in Chicago, Chance made history in 2017 when he became the first artist to win a Grammy for a streaming-only mixtape—collecting a trio of statues for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for his now iconic Coloring Book.
Chance has never signed a record deal — opting instead to make his music available for free. His career began with the release of his 2012 mixtape10 Day, followed by the 2013 release of Acid Rap, which garnered over 10 million downloads. His latest project and official debut album, The Big Day, cemented Chance in the rap pantheon.
Counting Common, Kirk Franklin and Freddie Mercury among his influences, Chance’s unique sound weaves gospel, jazz and soul together with hip hop. His work has attracted an eclectic mix of collaborators, including Kanye West, Randy Newman, Lil Wayne, Bon Iver, Childish Gambino, Justin Bieber, Cardi B, Shawn Mendes, Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran and John Legend.
With several international tours under his belt, Chance became a festival headliner—closing out Governor’s Ball, Rolling Loud, Lollapalooza and many others. His expanding career now also includes film and television credits, such as executive producing HBO’s A Shot in The Dark and Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe. In 2019, Chance joined an elite club by becoming one of the few celebrities to both host and perform on Saturday Night Live. He also serves as an executive producer and judge on Netflix’s hip-hop talent contest Rhythm+Flow. In 2021, he became the first artist to independently distribute a film through AMC Theatres via his Magnificent Coloring World concert film, written, produced, edited and distributed by Chance himself. His portrayal of the character Herbert on the HBO Max series Southside earned Chance a 2023 NAACP Image Award nomination for "Outstanding Guest Performance."
With his preternatural positivity, broad social media reach and boundless talent, Chance has forged a unique array of brand partnerships—from reworking Nestlé’s classic Kit Kat jingle to appearing in a Doritos Super Bowl ad with the Backstreet Boys to spawning a social media juggernaut for Wendy’s after he requested they bring back a popular menu item. Chance also has appeared in campaigns for H&M and Champion—and created an original song for Nike.
Chance’s passion for music and family extends to his commitment to giving back. Coming from a long line of activists and community organizers, Chance was raised with a deep faith and a strong sense of purpose. His nonprofit SocialWorks aims to inspire and empower youth through arts, education and civic engagement. Since 2016, SocialWorks has contributed $10M to the Chicagoland community.
In 2014, he made headlines by using the #savechicago hashtag to stop gun violence in the city for 42 hours. Whether by hosting a monthly high school “OpenMike” series at the Chicago Public Library, donating $2 million to Chicago Public Schools and mental wellness access or raising more than $7 million through SocialWorks for Chicago’s youth, Chance makes it a priority to be a positive force for good.
This Spring, Chance also made his highly anticipated debut as a judge on Season 23 of The Voice. The Voice is the #1 most-watched unscripted program on NBC and across all major broadcast networks in Live. The Voice reaches over 60 million unique viewers.
Chance kicked off 2023 by organizing a self-funded free festival in Accra, Ghana that drew upwards of 52,000 attendees. The "Black Starline Festival" was founded with a mission to foster cultural exchange between Black people of The Continent and the global Diaspora. The festival was a first of it’s kind and a testament to the future of world music.
Chance is on a path to intertwine the worlds of art, music and cinematography as he prepares to release a new body of work, Star Line Gallery. The project contains a series of works in collaboration with fine artists from The Continent and The Diaspora. The pieces redefine the notion of ‘album art. Over the past year, these works (“Child of God,” “A Bar About A Bar,” “The Highs & The Lows” and “YAH Know”) have premiered at art institutions around the world including Art Basel Switzerland and Miami, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), The Art Institute of Chicago, and Los Angeles’ Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA), with more to come later this year.
April 30th, 2023 also marks the 10 year anniversary of Chance’s first breakout mixtape Acid Rap. Chance is set to celebrate by embarking on a select number of shows this summer to commemorate the milestone.
